Note:
- Maximum allowable height is 51cm (20") or 5 blocks high. The wall will be 56cm (22") once you put the caps on.
- To build walls higher than the recommended 22", further reinforcements are required.
- For fire pits, we recommend the use of the 10" block and Rox caps.
- If you’re concerned about dirt washing between the spaces of the wall, put a layer of landscape fabric up the inside of the wall as you build it up.
Estimation Guide
1. Measure length of wall and convert it to inches. If you’re building a curved wall, lay a garden hose out in the shape of your wall. Then straighten the hose and measure; this is your length.
2. Divide total length of wall (inches) by 20. This gives you the number of 20" blocks per row required for total length.
3. Establish wall height required and divide by 4" to calculate the number of rows to be used.
4. Multiply the number of rows by the amount of blocks/row to calculate the total number of 20" blocks required. (Note: two 10" blocks will be used in every second row to allow for offsetting the joints. You will need to subtract one 20" block for this.)
5. To calculate capstone requirements, take the length of wall in inches and divide by 26". This then gives you the total number of 16" and 10" caps required. (The idea is to use an equal number of 16" and 10" caps as to give the appearance of natural stone.) You may need to cut or break one in order to fit odd lengths.
Retaining Wall Installation
1. Prepare a base of 4" to 6" of compacted gravel for the first layer of blocks, ensuring it is level.
2. Install the first row of 20" blocks with the front edges tight together. Finish this row with the proper sized blocks to make it fit.
3. Carefully backfill with either sand, gravel or soil around and in between blocks to pack and lock into place.
4. Begin and finish your second row with a 10" block to offset the joints from the first row and continue every second row in this manner.
5. Check for level often and backfill as you complete each row.
6. Complete by placing capstone on the entire length of the wall.
